Virtual Houston Edible Book Festival

April 1 All day

The Monster Book of Monsters
The Scarlet Letter

What’s an Edible Book Festival? Edible Book Festivals around the world celebrate books, humor, and imagination through the creation of dishes inspired by books and puns. Always celebrated on or around April 1st, it’s an event that features food shaped like, or referring to, books. This year The Printing Museum will be hosting an online virtual festival.

How will a virtual Edible Book Festival work? Any time between now and March 31st create a book out of food. Any edible book idea is eligible, whether it’s a favorite title, character, or event or a pun involving a book. Since it’s a virtual event, you’ll have plenty of time to craft your literary creation! The festival will be hosted as a photo album online, so in this case, a picture really is worth a thousand words!

Take a photo to submit your Edible Book! It’s free to enter. Any time between now and midnight March 31st, email info@printingmuseum.org with the subject line “Edible Book Festival”, along with the following details:

  • Your name:
  • Your entry’s name or title:
  • ONE photo of your completed edible book. [This will be used on our Facebook page and possibly on our website]
  • OPTIONAL
    • The book that is referenced
    • Description or inspiration about your entry, notable materials/ingredients used, etc.

Vote for your favorite! Entries will be added to our Facebook page as they’re received. Vote by giving the photo of your favorites a ‘like’, heart, or thumb’s up the photos for your favorites. The voting deadline will be 3pm Central time on Friday April 1st. Winners announced by 5pm on social media and contacted by email. Everyone is able to vote, so spread the word!

Prizes will be provided by The Printing Museum and awarded based on how many entries are received.

Important Dates:

  • Submission deadline: 3/31/2022 by midnight CT
  • Voting deadline: 4/1/2022 at 3pm
  • Winners announced by 5pm 4/1/2022

How did Edible Book Festivals get started? Art librarian Judith A. Hoffberg (1934-2009) and artist Béatrice Coron held the first edible book festival in 2000, after Judith conceived the idea at a holiday dinner with book artists in 1999.  Béatrice created the website with a photographic gallery of edible books and links to similar events worldwide. (managed until 2006).

The Annual Houston Edible Book Festival first started in 2015 when the Houston Book Arts Guild wanted to bring this festival, and the witty and creative connection between the books we love and the food we love to eat, to a wider audience.

And all are welcome to attend the Austin Edible Book Festival, an in-person event at Austin Book Arts Center. April 1, 2022, from 5 pm – 8 pm. For more information: 512-417-5845. https://www.facebook.com/events/1028759021375992
