This three-hour online class features discussion and demonstrations of a variety of printmaking techniques using a craft die-cutting machine. Also called Craft Presses, some adventurous printmakers have discovered that these roller presses originally designed for craft embossing and die-cutting offer a small, inexpensive and portable alternative to big expensive etching and printing presses. The risograph is a Japanese printer-duplicator that is seeing a resurgence in popularity among artists and zine (pronounced zeen) enthusiasts, due to its affordability and unique quality of prints.
RISO INKS:
Take your Risograph skills to the next level! Students will learn advanced print techniques to further master their ability to use the Riso for maximal effect in their creative work. Participants will explore the different functions using their own designs to create two color prints, including business cards, merchandise tags, flyers, pocket zines or more! Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own stamps and prints? Your chance is here! In this workshop, you will learn the basics of block printing, how to transfer your design, use your tools to carve your very own block, and how to achieve the best results printing. You’ll be able to build on the skills you learn in the workshop and will feel confident printing on your own at home. In this four-week course we will cover the process of printing a saddle-stitch book using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. Students will make a book that uses text and image to print directly from the computer to the riso. By the end of the course students will print their own book. We will learn all technicalities for setting up files for a multi-colored saddle-stitch booklet, including:
Photoshop file preparation
InDesign file set-up and working with text
Preparing files especially for riso, covering topics such as ink coverage, opacities, and trapping
Making an imposed file (for booklet saddle-stitch) without extra software
Setting up your computer to print directly to the risograph at the Printing Museum (the MZ790U)
Printing in “CMYK” with bit-mapped effects (using Medium Blue, Fluorescent Pink, Sunflower Yellow, and Black)
Schedule:
Week 1: introduction to riso specifics when preparing digital files, sharing examples
Week 2: working on art and text, demo on creating a ready-to-print imposed file
Week 3: printing day 1
Week 4: printing day 2 and finishing (collate, staple/bind, and trim books)

Standard copy paper will be provided by the museum and students can bring their own additional paper. A separate scanner will be available to scan drawings as well.

Learn the creative and technical processes in making a multi-color illustration on the risograph! The risograph is a beloved printer that mixes digital and offset printing, overlaying vibrant colors like a screenprint but with more detailed grain and halftones. In the first section of the workshop we will go over how the risograph works. Participants will see print examples and the various effects you can make layering multiple colors and opacities. Participants will also be introduced to various mark-making methods for hand-drawn stencils. In the second section students will be trained in how to operate the risograph to print their stencils and complete a multi-colored illustration.
Successful completion of the class certifies students to reserve the Risograph during Open Studio.

If you love letterpress and LEGOs, learn how to combine them in this playful alternative letterpress printing technique! In this fun, hands-on workshop, use LEGO tile bricks and a printing press to create your own unique 8-bit letterpress work of art. We’ll provide the bricks, press, and our helpful staff who will be on hand to assist you with printing your creation. You may want to bring an apron or old shirt you are willing to get ink and dirt on for this printing workshop.

Learn about the tools, techniques, and materials to successfully cut your own illustrations into linoleum blocks! In this workshop, you will learn the basics of block printing: how to transfer your design, how to choose the correct tool-tip, carving tips and tricks, managing ink and paper, and how to successfully pull a print.
