As a part of the University of Houston’s “Family & Community Day: Big Walls Big Dreams”

The Printing Museum will be hosting a gyotaku fish printing activity! Come learn about this fun form of printing and make your own unique fish prints; we will be using tempera paints and silicon fish molds (sorry, no fresh fish).

Join the University of Houston for a free, all-ages event featuring a new mural by Houston artist DUAL, part of UP Art Studio’s city-wide Big Walls, Big Dreams Festival. Meet the artist and explore his colorful creations. Join Break Free Worldwide for a breakdance performance and workshop, leave your mark on a collaborative Art Wall, move to the music and take your own DJ skills for a spin. Create a unique gyotaku print with The Printing Museum’s teaching artists and make art-inspired crafts take home. This workshop will be held in two parts, Thursdays 6-9pm:

October 13thonline via Zoom
October 20th: in-person at Lawndale Art Center

All times are US/Central time zone

Are you curious about the risograph? This course offers a basic overview of this fantastically accessible machine and its many functions, as well as personalized instruction to meet your project goals. Whether you’re interested in making zines, hand drawn prints, or photographic work – all levels and ideas are encouraged.

In this hybrid workshop, the first class will meet online over Zoom to go over where risography fits into the history of printmaking, go over the process, and discuss your project goals. The second class will meet at the Lawndale Art Center (not The Printing Museum!) for in person instruction to complete your print edition.

Levels: All experience levels welcome. No Riso experience necessary.

Equipment: Our riso is an EZ220u, which prints images up to 8 x 14 inches. We will have three color drums: fluorescent pink, sunflower, and mint. These drums mix beautifully and can approximate full color.

Materials: for the first week (meeting online), all you’re required to have is access to Zoom. During that meeting the instructor will discuss what optional materials you may want to bring to the in-person studio session the following week, such as larger paper. 8.5 x 11 printer paper is provided.

Location: Oct 13th will meet online; Oct 20th will meet at Lawndale Art Center, 4912 Main St, Houston, TX 77002 (not The Printing Museum).

Registration Fee: $145, including Riso inks, stencils, and paper.

Members receive a 10% discount. Become a member today! Members must log in to activate the discount. If you don’t have a login, please contact us at info[at]printingmuseum.org.

About the instructor: Chelsea Clarke is a recent graduate of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where she investigated the intersections of various media such as print, fibers, ceramics, and drawing. Her conceptual practice mirrors this multidisciplinary approach as it focuses on discrete yet intertwining identities and their effect on her daily life. She attended undergraduate at Virginia Commonwealth University where she also finished a post-Baccalaureate degree in Nonprofit Management, which she plans to use in order to found a radically accessible artist residency. As a Houston native, she is thrilled to return to her hometown and become a part of Texas’ vibrant artistic community.

Cyanotype demo with Caroline Roberts

October 8 @ 11:00 am 1:00 pm

Photogram cyanotype

Join us for a cyanotype demo/workshop with our Fall 2020 Artist-In-Residence Caroline Roberts. Learn from home how to make photographs without a camera, using the water-based cyanotype process and sunshine! We will learn about using objects, transparencies, and digital negatives to create images.

A materials list (below) is provided before the workshop for those who want to work alongside the instructor, (sunshine permitting, wherever you are Zooming from!)

Location: Online via Zoom. We are planning to make a recording of the program available to everyone who has registered for several weeks afterwards, so you will be able to watch the entire program at your convenience even if you can’t join us live.

Registration: $50.
Members receive a 10% discount. Become a member today!

Members must log in to activate the discount. If you don’t have a login, please contact us at info[at]printingmuseum.org. Cancellations and refund requests must be made a minimum of three days (72 hours) prior to the first class date, by calling (713) 522-4652.

Materials & supplies if you’d like to follow-along (not required):

  • Cyanotype solutions A&B:
Photographer’s Formulary http://stores.photoformulary.com/cyanotypes-liquid-original/ (also available at Adorama and B&H for the same price)
or Jacquard https://www.amazon.com/Jacquard-JCY1100-Cyanotype-Set/dp/B010MN312S/ – also often available in art supply stores!
Paper sturdy enough to stand up to soaking in water. Good quality cotton rag papers work well in general.
  • Or:
Sunprint paper – https://www.amazon.com/SunPrint-07990001235-Paper-Kit/dp/B073C9QYDG/ – again also available in art/craft supply stores!
  • Hake or other wide, soft brush (watercolor brushes work well!)
  • A board and sheet of glass/plexiglass larger than your paper (NB: be careful that the glass/plexi do not have a UV filter coating!)
  • Transparencies, objects, plants for creating prints. Feathers, fabrics and lace work really well! Flat objects make the sharpest outlines but 3D objects will cast interesting shadows in bright sunlight.
  • A container larger than your paper that you can fill with water (shallow is preferable but deep will work)
  • Somewhere to lay your pieces to dry – can be as simple as kitchen towel or cloths on a table
  • Kitchen towel to mop up spills and messes! Also useful to put under your paper to catch drips as you coat!

Before the Xerox Machine: Rediscovering Obsolete Copying Technology + DIY Publishing

June 18 @ 11:00 am 3:00 pm

Rich Dana

This in-person workshop (11AM – 3PM) explores pre-xerox copier technology and how contemporary artists and writers can use these low-cost techniques to publish editions of zines, chapbooks, prints, and flyers. We’ll begin by examining the history of office copying technology and how marginalized creators adopted these techniques in the early 20th century. Next, we’ll dive into demos of making master sheets, operation of vintage copiers, and creating your own simple copiers from off-the-shelf materials. Finally, participants will have full access to all of the materials and equipment to create their own editions with guidance from the instructor. We will explore hectography (gelatin printing) mimeography (stencil printing) and spirit duplication (alcohol transfers, also known as “ditto”).

Workshop
11AM-1PM: History, Technology and demos
1:30PM-3PM: Hands-on work session

Registration fee: $105

Drop-in
3:30-5PM: Zinemakers of all ages are invited to learn about mimeography and hectography, and create their own print!

Registration fee: $35.

Register for the workshop, the drop-in session, or both for a full day of fun! Registration includes all materials and supplies.

Visiting artist Rich Dana will be at The Printing Museum for a special all-day event that includes a four-hour intensive workshop for artists and zine-makers ages 16 and up, and an hour-and-a-half drop-in session for the copier-curious of all ages.

About the instructor:
Rich Dana teaches at the Center for the Book & School of Library and Information Science at the University of Iowa. SlugFest: Linotype Day 2022

May 21 @ 12:00 pm 3:00 pm

Celebrate the machine that Thomas Edison called “The Eighth Wonder of the World.”

Designed by Ottmar Mergenthaler in 1885, “Linotype” literally means “line of type.” The Linotype Machine was the first machine at which a person could use a keyboard to compose a single line of type, and cast it in lead, called a “slug”. The Linotype machine revolutionized typesetting, moving the craft from laborious hand-setting individual letters, to swiftly mechanically casting an entire line of type.

Don’t miss this special chance to see our Linotype Model 31 in action, casting hot metal type! This Linotype machine, manufactured by Mergenthaler Linotype Co, dates from the 1950s. It was operated for several years at the Houston Chronicle, where as many as 35 of these machines were used to produce the daily and weekend editions. This machine was last employed commercially in the 1980s by a local typographer.

Donate and get a line-o-type!

AmountWhat you get
$25 »1 line/slug of type
$45 »2 lines/slugs of type
$60 » 3 lines/slugs of type

We’ll be casting type from noon to 3pm, if you would like to have YOUR OWN line of type. Your donation supports the care, preservation, and display of the Linotype machine and The Printing Museum’s mission to ignite creativity, foster tangible self-expression, and champion the history and power of print.

Showing in the theater:

  • Farewell, Etaoin Shrdlu (1978) – Filmed on July 1, 1978, this documentary by David Loeb Weiss chronicles the end of “hot type” at The New York Times — and the introduction of computers into The Times’s printing process. [29m]
  • Linotype: The Film (2012) – A feature-length documentary film centered around the Linotype typecasting machine invented by Ottmar Mergenthaler in 1886. [1h 16m]

Special Event free with Museum Admission.

Illustration for Riso

May 21 @ 11:00 am 4:00 pm

Learn the creative and technical processes in making a multi-color illustration on the risograph! The risograph is a beloved printer that mixes digital and offset printing, overlaying vibrant colors like a screenprint but with more detailed grain and halftones. In the first section of the workshop we will go over how the risograph works. Participants will see print examples and the various effects you can make layering multiple colors and opacities. Participants will also be introduced to various mark-making methods for hand-drawn stencils. In the second section students will be trained in how to operate the risograph to print their stencils and complete a multi-colored illustration.

Successful completion of the class certifies students to reserve the Risograph during Open Studio.

AGES: 16+
LEVELS: All experience levels welcome.

Recommended Materials: Students are encouraged to bring an illustration idea/sketch, and a sketchbook. It is also helpful but optional to bring your favorite black markers, pens, and black pencils. (All necessary supplies will be available at the workshop).
