Gather your supplies and follow along with us as we make a cute-as-a-button miniature book, using two buttons for covers and materials on-hand at home. The small class size allows for individual attention, so sign up early before it fills up! This workshop is best-suited for participants 13 years of age and older.
Materials you’ll want to gather ahead of time:
- Buttons, x2 the same size (larger is better) flat without a shank. Anything you have two of that’s flat & round will work though, wooden nickels, clock faces, etc.
- Ribbon, narrow (1/8”-¼”) and 24” long.
- Paper for pages, heavy weight text or cardstock. It can be all the same, or you can use a decorative paper for the half that will be the “front” and a plain paper for the half that will be the “back” side of the pages.
- Glue for pages: PVA, white glue, or glue stick
- Glue for button covers: a heavy duty glue like E6000 or Gorilla Glue
- Scrap paper for glueing on
- TOOLS: pencil & eraser, scissors, paste brush (if using PVA/white glue)
- OPTIONAL: a circle-punch the same diameter as your buttons. Otherwise we’ll be tracing and cutting w/ scissors.
- OPTIONAL: decoration for your pages. Suggestions: cut-out images, photos, rubber stamps, pen for drawing
Location: Online via Zoom

UPDATE: The Printing Museum is taking recommended safety precautions regarding COVID-19 and will remain temporarily closed. We regret that this means this workshop will be cancelled, but look forward to scheduling it again at a future date! If you have purchased tickets for this workshop, our staff will be reaching out to you with options. We will still be available to serve our community by email, and continue to closely watch the developing situation. Stay healthy, Houston!
Wherever you go and however you like to get there, there’s a journal bound to be the perfect traveling companion for you. In this updated workshop, we’ll make a cohesive set of travel books that encompass four classic book formats in one neat ensemble.
Our case-bound pocket portfolio, with a topographic map cover, contains both a Japanese wrapped-back journal (also with pockets!) and a single signature pamphlet stitch notebook. A separate concertina cardholder folded from a road map is perfect for holding the business cards of your favorite stops along your route.
You will come away from this workshop packed with book ideas and ready to roll. You are welcome to bring any maps you want to use – about 12” tall x 28” long — but plenty of road-worthy materials will be provided.
Registration: $120 including materials; members receive a 10% discount. Become a member today!

This out-of-this-world workshop presents projects designed to show off our fascination with outer space — from the Jetsons to the space station — and our love of books, which give our imaginations flight. Together, we’ll make use (or re-use) of discarded book covers, illustrations, and text pages. Learn cutting, folding, and construction techniques to transform thrift shop books into a variety of 3-D sculptural objects to combine in infinite possibilities.
Projects include individual design elements such as hollow orbs, folded ‘flying saucer’ and ornament text blocks, and book ‘bursts’ as well as folded sculptures from entire books to wall hang or lay flat as fluffy bases to build upon or use as centerpieces. Or construct a fanciful spaceship from one entire book. Lee’s other “Repurposed” book projects will be shown and discussed so you’ll go home with plenty of patterns and ideas.
Registration: $75 including materials; members receive a 10% discount. Become a member today!
