There will also be time at the end for any Q&A.
Cynthia Giron (MFA – Painting, University of North Texas) is a first-generation American whose painting practice explores early and recent memories of living in-between two cultures. Giron plans to create an artist book/games, drawings, and a paper installation that examines the importance of memories and how childhood moments are intrinsically linked with play.
Nicolle LaMere (MFA – Ceramics, Texas Tech University) is on a journey to know the cosmos, working with ceramics and elemental materials to create sculptural objects and transmedia installations. LaMere plans to explore the theme of light and serenity through voluminous cast paper forms and effervescent prints, in hopes of generating uplifting moments of healing.
The event is FREE and open to all, and will be held virtually over Zoom.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
We are planning to make a recording of the program available, so you will be able to watch the entire program at your convenience even if you can’t join us live, although we do hope you will!

Raw Materials in Peace and War is an ongoing series of artist books, named after an economics book written by Anderson-Staley’s grandfather in 1937, which explore the intersections of history and private lives, especially in moments of conflict and tension. Her handmade books are unconventional autobiographies that reimagine her father’s mountainous archive of papers, even as his memory is increasingly lost to dementia. She prints her own photographs and paper negatives derived from her father’s papers, directly onto her source archives, forming palimpsests on which the layers challenge and erase each other, creating new associations.

“Empowher: Celebrating Women’s Right to Vote” virtual exhibit highlights the vital importance of women’s right to vote in the US and the importance of graphic design as social engagement. Each of the twenty-four posters was designed by a senior graphic design student in the Graphic Design Program within the University of Houston’s Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts, School of Art. Equal parts assignment and activism, the posters allowed student designers to participate in AIGA National’s Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote campaign as well as the larger national discourse on women’s rights and voting.
Dottie Erwin-Legendre: Paper Expressions explores the full, expressive potential of handmade paper. Malleable and natural in the formative state, paper in the artist’s hands becomes an impression of nature, imbued with meaning. The fluid and organic medium is cast, colored, shaped, and layered to create serenely powerful, sculptural work. Textures and contours interplay, submerging and surfacing, vanishing and reappearing. Erwin-Legendre’s work transforms utilitarian into aesthetic, inviting the viewer to experience its subtle complexities.
Meet the “Wandering Book Artists” Peter and Donna Thomas during the Houston stop of their cross-country tour celebrating 40 years of making books by hand. They will share stories of their travels and samples of their limited-edition and one-of-a-kind books in a presentation that will be sure to inspire.
The Thomases are book artists from Santa Cruz, California. They make paper, print and bind books. They make both edition and one-of-a-kind books, which combine the precision of the fine press aesthetic with the structural creativity found in contemporary artists’ books. Current books available are shown on their website: http://www2.cruzio.com/~peteranddonna/. Peter and Donna will also be leading a workshop — Illustrating with Wood Type — at the Museum the following day.
