Color Separation for Letterpress

June 22 @ 6:00 pm 7:30 pm

Learning how to get from letterpress type to the print you’re after takes some practice. After years of winging it, Syd has found a composing process that makes the best use of her time and cuts way down on revisions. In this demo she will share her process for using Adobe Photoshop and handset type to design the layout, separate layers, and plan for color mixing in a letterpress print.

Age restriction/recommendation: Best suited for folks with an interest in letterpress typesetting.

Printing books on the Riso using Adobe

April 12: 6:00 – 8:00pm
April 19: 6:00 – 8:00pm
April 26: 6:00 – 8:00pm

In this four-week course we will cover the process of printing a saddle-stitch book using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. Students will make a book that uses text and image to print directly from the computer to the riso. By the end of the course students will print their own book. We will learn all technicalities for setting up files for a multi-colored saddle-stitch booklet, including:

  • Photoshop file preparation
  • InDesign file set-up and working with text
  • Preparing files especially for riso, covering topics such as ink coverage, opacities, and trapping
  • Making an imposed file (for booklet saddle-stitch) without extra software
  • Setting up your computer to print directly to the risograph at the Printing Museum (the MZ790U)
  • Printing in “CMYK” with bit-mapped effects (using Medium Blue, Fluorescent Pink, Sunflower Yellow, and Black)

Schedule:

  • Week 1: introduction to riso specifics when preparing digital files, sharing examples
  • Week 2: working on art and text, demo on creating a ready-to-print imposed file
  • Week 3: printing day 1
  • Week 4: printing day 2 and finishing (collate, staple/bind, and trim books)

Successful completion of the class certifies students to reserve the Risograph during Open Studio.

AGES: 16+
LEVELS: All experience levels welcome. No Riso experience necessary. Beginner Photoshop and/or InDesign skills recommended but not required.

Required Materials: Bring your personal computer to each class. It is required to have Photoshop and InDesign installed and accessible on your computer.

Recommended Materials: Students should bring an idea for a book: this could be a zine, comic, writing with illustrations, or any combination that includes text and images. Standard copy paper will be provided by the museum and students can bring their own additional paper. A separate scanner will be available to scan drawings as well.

Registration Fee: $185, including Riso inks and paper.
