Come play and experiment with low-relief printing on letterpress! Stratography, also known as pressure printing, is a hybrid blend of monotype and low-relief printmaking methods using letterpress printing equipment that results in softer edges than traditionally associated with printing. It’s a playful form of printmaking for traditional printmakers and letterpress printers looking for new mark making effects for their work. However, all artists are welcome! This technique lends itself equally well to both abstract and subjective image making.
All experience levels welcome. This class does not certify for Open Studio.
Ages 18+
All materials supplied.
Optional: Students are encouraged to bring low-relief objects such as lace, small feathers, or other similarly flat objects for experimental printing.

Learn the tips and tricks to take the frustration out of aligning multiple colors in your letterpress prints. In this class students will split up amongst platen and cylinder presses and learn the similar techniques to getting that beautiful, perfect alignment…or how to intentionally mis-register your prints to create an effect. Mastering registration is one of the key skills for pulling a consistent edition. Learning this skill will help you save time on press and reduce frustration when working with multiple colors. We’ll also address ink selection and mixing.
This class takes place over two sessions and is open to students who have successfully completed Learn Letterpress 1 & 2 or by permission of the instructor for those with previous letterpress experience. This class will benefit those who’ve take Digital Letterpress and would like to advance their multiplate registration skills. Successful completion of Levels 1, 2, and 3 certifies a student to use letterpress equipment during Open Studio.
