Get ready to eat your words!!! April Fools’ is the perfect time to blend culinary creativity with literary love and sprinkle with a dash of humor.

The Monster Book of Monsters
The Catcher in the Rye
The Scarlet Letter
The Tale of Peter Rabbit

What’s an Edible Book Festival? Edible Book Festivals around the world celebrate books, humor, and imagination through the creation of dishes inspired by books and puns. Always celebrated on or around April 1st, it’s an event that features food shaped like, or referring to, books. It is a fun and engaging community activity which involves both children’s and adults’ books. This year The Printing Museum is partnering with the Houston Book Arts Guild and hosting the festival at our new location in Midtown! This event brings delight to both entrants and onlookers. We will have a light-hearted competition which is determined by votes from the audience!

How does it work? If you want to participate and make an edible entree, please click this register button to fill out a short survey about your creation. Participants attend the event FREE! On April 1st, you will bring your entry to show off at the festival! The deadline to signup to participate is 6pm on Saturday March 25th

All submissions will be displayed with plenty of time provided for photo ops for your group’s website and social media pages.  We’ll have light refreshments on hand, should all entries prove too good (or impossible) to eat! A little competition adds spice to the evening: Guests will vote their favorites in these categories:

  • Best Depiction of a Classic
  • Most Appetizing
  • Funniest/Punniest
  • Beloved Children’s Book
  • Overall Fave

Prizes to be provided through donation by local bookstores, artists and eateries. Everyone gets a vote so bring your people!

General Admission April 1

Adults and Seniors $5*
Students (K-college): Free
Members: Free
Participants: Free
*Admission is free for adults and seniors if you donate a gently-used book to our book drive

The Edible Book Festival is free with general admission. Visitors are encouraged to see the community’s culinary creations and vote for their favorites as well as tour the new Printing Museum exhibits! No need to register in advance – just show up!

Covid Protocol: Sampling the cakes will be up to the visitors’ discretion. The Printing Museum will provide refreshments and snacks that will be pre-packaged.

How did Edible Book Festivals get started? Art librarian Judith A. Hoffberg (1934-2009) and artist Béatrice Coron held the first edible book festival in 2000, after Judith conceived the idea at a holiday dinner with book artists in 1999.  Béatrice created the website with a photographic gallery of edible books and links to similar events worldwide. (managed until 2006).

The Annual Houston Edible Book Festival first started in 2015 when the Houston Book Arts Guild wanted to bring this festival, and the witty and creative connection between the books we love and the food we love to eat, to a wider audience.
