Gyotaku (meaning “fish impression”) originated in 19th Century Japan. Fishermen originally developed it as a method of recording the exact size and species of the fish they caught. Today, however, gyotaku has evolved into a method for making beautiful art, seen as a celebration of nature and form. Fish are rolled with paint or ink, and are then carefully pressed against paper or fabric to make banners, wrapping paper, or pieces of art for your home. This is known as a monoprinting process, which means each resulting piece will be unique! And the availability of high quality gyotaku replica fish means you don’t even have to be an expert angler to explore the subtle beauty of this printmaking method! Participants in this workshop will be able to create & take home with them their own gyotaku prints made on rice paper.

Kyle Durrie of Power and Light Press (Silver City, NM) is once again on the move! She’ll be visiting Houston with her “Moveable Type” truck, demonstrating letterpress printing at The Printing Museum on Saturday March 14th from 1-4pm.
Come check out the “Moveable Type” truck, learn how to print the old fashioned way, and peruse a selection of Power and Light Press’ letterpress printed merchandise available for sale.
This is the second cross-country tour Kyle Durrie has made with the mobile print shop truck. She is visiting small towns and big cities to spread the good word about the craft of letterpress printing, by hosting public pop-ups, letterpress demos, and events along the way.
Get creative with wood type in this special workshop with visiting book artists Peter and Donna Thomas, who will explore various ways of using wood type to create illustrations. Each participant will use letters to create shapes or graphic images or use letters and words to create abstract designs. They will then print the type using multiple color runs, using a split fountain, learning how to change the value and tone of the color during the various press runs without having to wash up in-between. Each participant will make enough copies to share with the other classmates. We will end the workshop by creating a non-adhesive folder binding to hold the prints.
Peter and Donna Thomas are book artists from Santa Cruz, California. They make paper, print and bind books. They make both edition and one-of-a-kind books. Their books combine the precision of the fine press aesthetic with the structural creativity found in contemporary artists’ books. Current books available are shown on their website: http://www2.cruzio.com/~peteranddonna/. They are celebrating 40 years of making books and traveling cross country as “Wandering Book Artists” to visit the libraries that are hosting shows of their work.
