Learn how to design and print using tessellation patterns – the art of repeating motifs. This versatile type of design is useful for a variety of surfaces: paper, fabric and even décor! Join Michelle Wiebe as she guides you through the principals of creating linoleum blocks that create a grand motif when printed in tandem. She will provide tips, techniques and multiple approaches for simple to complex interlocking designs. Also discussed will be surface and ink considerations for a wide range of projects. This interactive demonstration includes places for lots of questions so that you can take this information and start customizing it to your projects with confidence.

UPDATE: Originally February 19th, due to severe winter weather in and around Houston, this workshop has been rescheduled for March 19th.
Explore the possibilities of Linocut printmaking to create expressive patterns on textiles. Join artist, Michelle Wiebe, as she guides students through this versatile fabric printing technique. In this fun, fast paced demonstration, students will learn basic linocut skills, fabric preparation and they types of ink that can be used for permanent prints. Also covered will be pattern development, custom color mixing and all sorts of tips and tricks for success. Learn new ways to transform fabric into custom printed works of art using basic materials found at your local art store. There will also be plenty of time for questions throughout this interactive event, participants who have sketches and ideas, need troubleshooting on current projects or fabrics they’d like to work with are encouraged to keep them at hand for specific advice on achieving successful prints.

During this online demo we print a two-color, thank you note card on a platen press. From composing and lock-up, to mixing ink and printing, you get to see the whole operation and ask questions along the way. When we’re done we’ll send you a pack of 10 with blank envelopes.

Demonstration Description:
Learn all about the history and evolution of letterpress printing and how you can incorporate it into your printmaking or mixed media practice. Using a Kelsey table top press during the demonstration, Michelle Wiebe will guide you through basic terminology, press operation as well as show you basic lock up techniques for type and linocuts. There will also be plenty of time for questions throughout this interactive demonstration. Thinking outside of the traditional realm of typesetting and printing text, she will show you ways to take letterpress printed material and incorporate it into 2D and 3D work as well as ways to achieve fine art quality limited edition prints on a press. If you are working with acrylic paints, relief printmaking, collages already, this will be especially helpful for you to find ways to explore new elements in your art making.

Optionally, you can also purchase a $25 supplies kit [that includes everything you’ll need] for pickup from The Printing Museum, or shipped within the US for an additional $5 fee at least 2 weeks prior to the workshop date.
Join Paul Moxon as he teaches cylinder press maintenance and repair using The Printing Museum’s presses. While working on the museum’s presses, Paul will also discuss common issues attendees will face when doing similar work themselves. Attend all day or log-in just for the machines you are interested in. Approximate schedule of machine maintenance:
