Papermaking Demo & Studio Setup

October 15, 2022 @ 11:00 am 12:00 pm

Join Kathy Gurwell in an informative class on the history of paper making equipment, comparing various traditional and non-traditional methods (which are similar, but differences will be shown and explained). As paper making traveled around the globe, details changed but the basics are the same. Kathy will talk about both western and Japanese papermaking equipment and the fibers commonly used for each. A short demonstration at her home studio will include pulling a sheet of paper, Western style from cotton pulp, with examples of other styles of paper. She will also offer suggestions for equipment, supplies, skills, and resources so you can set up a home studio of your own. Ask questions along the way in this interactive demonstration.

Registration: $25

Members receive a 10% discount. Become a member today! Members must log in to activate the discount. If you don’t have a login, please contact us at info[at]printingmuseum.org.

TPM Talk: Paper, Parchment, & Papyrus!

November 19, 2022 @ 11:00 am 12:00 pm

Man has been making marks on surfaces for thousands of years; in this informative talk learn more how handmade writing and printing surfaces have evolved, from the papyrus of old to the paper of today. Kathy Gurwell, resident Master Papermaker at The Printing Museum, will offer a timeline of that progression, including where, when, and why each new form developed. We will explore the early surfaces of papyrus, parchment and the development of paper around the world. Samples shown will include those both fiber-based (such as flax, bamboo, abaca, cotton, and kozo) and animal-based (parchment), as well as unique surfaces such as wood and stone paper.

Registration: The event is FREE and open to all. Please consider making a tax-deductible gift! Your donation helps keep our program fees accessible to all. Thank you! In order to best serve our community near and far, many of our online classes are pay-what-you-can. During programs, registrants can watch the instructor live or work alongside them, ask questions, and get feedback.

Location: It will be held virtually over Zoom. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

We are planning to make a recording of the program available to everyone who has registered for several weeks afterwards, so you will be able to watch the entire program at your convenience even if you can’t join us live.

Cyanotypes

April 30, 2021 @ 11:00 am 1:00 pm

Photogram cyanotype

Join us for a cyanotype demo/workshop with our Fall 2020 Artist-In-Residence Caroline Roberts. Learn to make photographs without a camera, using the water-based cyanotype process and sunshine! We will learn about using objects, transparencies, and digital negatives to create images.

A materials list (with suggested sources) will be provided before the workshop for those who want to work alongside (sunshine permitting!)

Materials & supplies:

  • Cyanotype solutions A&B:
Photographer’s Formulary http://stores.photoformulary.com/cyanotypes-liquid-original/ (also available at Adorama and B&H for the same price)
or Jacquard https://www.amazon.com/Jacquard-JCY1100-Cyanotype-Set/dp/B010MN312S/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=cyanotype&qid=1619561355&sr=8-3 – also often available in art supply stores!
Paper sturdy enough to stand up to soaking in water. Good quality cotton rag papers work well in general.
  • Or:
Sunprint paper – https://www.amazon.com/SunPrint-07990001235-Paper-Kit/dp/B073C9QYDG/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=sunprint&qid=1619561620&sr=8-3 – again also available in art/craft supply stores!
  • Hake or other wide, soft brush (watercolor brushes work well!)
  • A board and sheet of glass/plexiglass larger than your paper (NB: be careful that the glass/plexi do not have a UV filter coating!)
  • Transparencies, objects, plants for creating prints. Feathers, fabrics and lace work really well! Flat objects make the sharpest outlines but 3D objects will cast interesting shadows in bright sunlight.
  • A container larger than your paper that you can fill with water (shallow is preferable but deep will work)
  • Somewhere to lay your pieces to dry – can be as simple as kitchen towel or cloths on a table
  • Kitchen towel to mop up spills and messes! Also useful to put under your paper to catch drips as you coat!

Location: Online via Zoom. We are planning to make a recording of the program available to everyone who has registered, so you will be able to watch the entire program at your convenience even if you can’t join us live.

Korean-Style Binding with Wax Decoration Covers

November 12, 2022 @ 10:00 am 12:00 pm

The traditional Korean binding structure has a few distinct characteristics for a side-stitched East Asian binding structure and in this workshop you will get to try them firsthand. This style of binding can also be easily adaptable to make contemporary books for sketching, drawing, and artists books.

Tools required (gather yourself): X-Acto knife or scalpel, metal ruler (at least 12”), bone folder, cutting mat, scissors, scrap of foam core or cardboard for punching sewing stations, awl or pin-vice for punching holes, waste paper, pencil.

Ages: best suited for those ages 13+

Registration: $75; includes a $25 materials kit mailed to you via US flat-rate shipping (US-only please). Please note the registration deadline, Oct 28th, two weeks prior to class starting, to allow time for kits to arrive.
