Learn the basics of safely and securely locking up type and images in a platen press chase. In this class, Michelle Wiebe will walk you through the fundamentals of setting type, furniture placement, quoin lock up and registration. We will also explore makeready, shimming items, leveling a platen press, as well as common lock up frustrations and troubleshooting. This class is designed to help you understand the underlying principles so that you can be confident that you are producing beautiful prints without damaging your press and type. There will also be plenty of time for questions throughout this interactive event, participants who have sketches and ideas, need advice on current projects are encouraged to keep them at hand for specific advice on achieving successful prints.

Flags & Tunnel Books

Create expandable books with depth and perspective. A flag book has an expandable spine with layers of paper “flags” that pop out, making it a delightful structure for evoking movement and action. Tunnel books, also known as “peep show” books, expand for a dramatic three-dimensional effect through layered cut-out panels. Students will complete a finished book of both structures, plus models and ideas for variations.

Tools required (gather yourself): X-Acto knife or scalpel and extra blades, bone folder, metal ruler (at least 12”), small triangle 3-4”, cutting mat, scissors, PVA glue, glue brush, waste paper, pencil.

Stab Bindings

Ages: best suited for those ages 13+

In this workshop participants will learn two different variations of Stab Bindings. These bindings combine decorative stitching, single sheets or folios and a folded paper cover. The cover could be made from participants’ own 2D work or from purchased decorative paper.

Tools required (gather yourself): Olfa/Xacto/scalpel-style knife with sharp blade, bone folder, binder clip, metal ruler (at least 12”), cutting mat, scissors, glue stick or paste & a brush, waste paper, pencil, hammer, and a scrap piece of wood (approximately 8’’x10’’) that you can hammer on top of.

Stay Sharp – Carving Tool Maintenance for Relief Printers

Join Michelle Wiebe as she guides you through the science and practice of maintaining razor sharp edges on your gouges. Having a properly maintained set of tools will result in greater carving accuracy, longer lasting blades, reduced physical fatigue as well as less chance of injury. Using a basic set up of easily made or purchased tools she will show you how to hone, sharpen and repair dings on your U gouges, V gouges and Chisels. All items demonstrated can either be inexpensively purchased locally or else up-cycled from easily sourced scraps.

This is an excellent resource or refresher for anyone who is intimidated by the world of sharpening, those who have inherited some long neglected tools as well as artists who are considering upgrading from their current student set of blades. This demonstration is interactive so there will be plenty of time during and afterwards to ask specific questions. Participants are encouraged to have their current set of tools and questions handy during the course of the demonstration for personalized guidance.

Nature Printing demo with Rebecca Chamlee

Directly printing forms found in the natural world has been used for centuries by scientists, naturalists and artists to preserve the ephemeral beauty of nature. This three-hour live online demonstration and discussion workshop explores a variety of printmaking techniques to create images on paper with fresh and pressed plant materials. 

Demonstrations include: Botanical contact printing, also called eco-printing, an immersion technique where bundles of plants and paper are cooked in a dye bath. Traditional Japanese nature printing of fresh specimens on washi papers and direct brayer printing techniques plus watercolor painted leaf prints, collagraphs and monotype printing methods that can be made with an etching press or a craft die-cutting machine. Each student will receive a detailed pdf handout with resources prior to the class. Printed examples of the techniques presented by Rebecca will be mailed to each participant following the class!

Basic Letterpress Set-Up

Are you new to letterpress printing or do you live in an area that is far from tools and supplies? Join Michelle Wiebe as she explores traditional printing accessories and the dos and don’ts of improvising materials with your presses and projects. This interactive demonstration will cover the logic behind why we strive to use the traditional items in our printing and alternatives that are safe for both you and your machine. Topics covered will include materials for lock up, printing and clean up that can be easily sourced from your local art or hardware store. Also discussed will be alternatives to press accessories such as gauge pins, tympan paper and rollers as well as how to get started with a simplified or incomplete set up. There will be plenty of time during this demonstration to cover questions and individual challenges, so specific questions are welcome. If you are facing challenges on completing your studio set up – this class is for you.

Refurbishing a Small Press

Thinking about investing in some letterpress equipment or have a rusty little machine that you would love to bring back to life? Using a table top Kelsey Platen Press to demonstrate, Michelle Wiebe will cover basic press components and operation as well as how to spot damaged areas, cleaning methods, making minor repairs and sourcing replacement parts (much of this information is applicable to a wide range of press models and styles). She will also touch on where to gain printing knowledge and find resources that can lead you further into your letterpress journey. If you have been looking for a place to really understand the potential of letterpress printing as well as for those who may have inherited some equipment and are not sure where to start with restoring it – this class is for you! Perfect Linocut Registration

Interested in expanding the variety of color in your print images? Michelle Wiebe will guide you in the secrets of planning and executing multiple block prints lots of color. She will show you how to design and transfer your image to multiple blocks so that they are placed in correct alignment and using a table top Kelsey Platen press she will give a variety of approaches to locking up your multi block creations and neatly printing your layers.
