Join Kathy Gurwell in an informative class on the history of paper making equipment, comparing various traditional and non-traditional methods (which are similar, but differences will be shown and explained). As paper making traveled around the globe, details changed but the basics are the same. Kathy will talk about both western and Japanese papermaking equipment and the fibers commonly used for each. A short demonstration at her home studio will include pulling a sheet of paper, Western style from cotton pulp, with examples of other styles of paper. She will also offer suggestions for equipment, supplies, skills, and resources so you can set up a home studio of your own. Ask questions along the way in this interactive demonstration.
Registration: $25.

Materials & supplies if you’d like to follow-along (not required):
Hake or other wide, soft brush (watercolor brushes work well!)
A board and sheet of glass/plexiglass larger than your paper (NB: be careful that the glass/plexi do not have a UV filter coating!)
Transparencies, objects, plants for creating prints. Feathers, fabrics and lace work really well! Flat objects make the sharpest outlines but 3D objects will cast interesting shadows in bright sunlight.
A container larger than your paper that you can fill with water (shallow is preferable but deep will work)
Somewhere to lay your pieces to dry – can be as simple as kitchen towel or cloths on a table
Kitchen towel to mop up spills and messes! Also useful to put under your paper to catch drips as you coat!
Gather your supplies and follow along with us as we make paper beads together! The small class size allows for individual attention and Q&A, so sign up early before it fills up. This workshop is best-suited for participants 13 years of age and older.
Materials& Supplies you’ll want to gather ahead of time:
paper – scraps work great! Whatever pieces of decorative paper, colored paper, magazine pages… just about anything works
glue – either PVA, white glue, glue stick
cutting supplies – a metal-edged rulers & X-acto knife & cutting mat (preferred), or scissors.
awl, quilling tool, or round toothpick
