This installment of Monthly Monotype covers watercolor monoprinting. Students may use dish and tube watercolors, or watercolor crayons to develop full color compositions on plastic plates, which we will print onto thick, archival paper using the Museum’s etching press. The gradual buildup of residual watercolor pigment on the surface of the plate after printing creates a surface that allows the artist to rework the image and reprint the plate with a richer, denser, more vibrant result each time. These successive prints are called “states”, and each one is inevitably a little different. Students are recommended to bring an 8 x 10 sketch or photographic image to class, and will use this method to develop two or more versions of their image.
You may wish to bring your own apron and reusable gloves. All other materials will be supplied.

This workshop will introduce students to the additive method, which allows artists to create rich, painterly full color compositions. Utilizing thinned oil-based printing inks and plastic printing plates, students will learn to use brushes, rollers, stamps, masks and more to create unique artworks that only need to go through the press once. This technique lends itself to painters and drawers, and is great for beginners and experienced printmakers alike. Students will have the opportunity to print on the Museum’s large etching press.
Inks in multiple colors, as well as acrylic printing plates are provided for the workshop. You may wish to bring your own apron and reusable gloves. All other materials will be supplied.

Stratography, also known as pressure printing, is a hybrid blend of monotype and low-relief printmaking methods using letterpress printing equipment. It’s a playful form of printmaking for traditional printmakers and letterpress printers looking for new directions or effects for their work. However, all artists are welcome! This technique lends itself equally well to both abstract and subjective image making. You are encouraged to bring low-texture, thin objects to add to your prints during this highly experimental printmaking experience.
All experience levels welcome. Age Restriction: 18+
Materials: You are welcome to bring low texture, thin items to experiment with in your printing. You may wish to bring your own apron and reusable gloves. All other materials will be supplied.
Registration: $80, all supplies included.

This workshop covers the dark field or “maniere noire” method of monoprinting, which utilizes cloth, brushes, and q-tips to wipe ink away from a fully inked plate, and create an image. This technique lends itself to painters and drawers, and is great for beginners and experienced printmakers alike. Students will have the opportunity to print on the Museum’s large etching press. Inks in multiple colors, as well as acrylic printing plates are provided for the workshop.
