Have you wondered how those beautiful marbled patterned papers are made? In this hands-on one-day workshop, instructor Tony Vela will show you how! The class will start by going over the preparation of materials, including the carrageenan bath, alum treatment of your paper, and getting pigments to the right state ready for marbling. You’ll learn many of the traditional patterns, such as the Stone marble, Get Gel, Nonpareil, Peacock, French curl, Spanish wave, and more. Each person will be able to make up to 15 marbled sheets to take home.
Level: No experience necessary | Adults 18+

Then we’ll demonstrate how to marble classic traditional patterns, as well as modern styles. Ask questions along the way in this interactive demonstration.
Location: Online via Zoom. We are planning to make a recording of the program available to everyone who has registered for several weeks afterwards, so you will be able to watch the entire program at your convenience even if you can’t join us live.

About the instructor: Tony Vela is part of a 2nd generation family of bookbinders that have proudly served the greater Houston area for nearly 50 years. He splits his time between the two binderies, the family business in Missouri City, The Bookbindery, and Vela Custom Bookmakers in Houston at Spring Street Studios. At Vela Custom Bookmakers, their specialty and what they are known for is their restoration and rebind services. They are most proud of their attention to detail and craftsmanship, and their family heritage as bookbinders. They hope to continue that with their children for the next generation.
