Join Janet Reynolds as she reveals the technique used to make her miniature book, “Security Circles” which was chosen as a part of the Book Arts Houston exhibition. Participants in this workshop will create their own 8-page version of this miniature book based on a circular form. This highly flexible binding technique is appropriate for new and experienced book binders. All materials will be provided; however, attendees are invited to bring imagery that will fit into a 1 1/4″ circle to personalize their own books. Adults 18+

Cork fabric is a beautiful, fun, new material that is a great eco-friendly alternative to leather. In this beginner level class, we will line the cork with cotton fabric and use the versatile long stitch binding to create a three signature journal. Instructions and tips on how to measure covers, create signatures and jigs, and bind the book will be covered. No need to bring anything, all materials and tools will be provided.

Have you ever wanted to make zine with a group of other artists? Well, now you can with Houston-based artist and educator Ian Gerson! Collaborative zine making is a great way to exchange ideas and be inspired while inspiring other. This workshop is welcoming to both experienced zine makers and those curious about the process. Guided by a loose prompt of considering your relationship to place, we will experiment with collage and drawing to create pages for the zine. Every participant will leave with a collectively made zine highlighting our commonalities and celebrating our differences. Adults 18+

Using a Readers Digest book, participants will create a junk journal, which is a handmade book made with recycled/repurposed materials. The instructor will share methods for making pockets and fold out sections in the book as well as ways to dye/stain paper will.
In the class participants would:
Organize the papers to put in each signature, and trim them down with decorative scissors.
We will make pockets and foldouts as part of the signatures.
We will punch the holes in the book and signatures and stitch together.
All materials will be supplied, however participants are welcome to bring personal papers or ephemera that they would like to include in their junk journal!
