This unique origami-style book starts as a single sheet of paper that comes together after scoring, cutting, and folding it just so. Materials & Supplies you’ll want to gather ahead of time: regular text-weight paper 4″ x 12″; cardstock 3 1/4″ x 2″; ruler; bonefolder (or other tool for scoring); glue stick; Xacto knife & cutting mat.

In this class, participants will learn how to turn old books into functional and attractive usable boxes. Students will go through the process of selecting a book, removing the text block, prepping the book for the box structure, and constructing a box to fit in the book. Books, paper, and other materials will be provided. Students will leave the class with the skills to make a Secret Stash Box at home.

Gather your supplies and follow along with us as we make a cute-as-a-button miniature book, using two buttons for covers and materials on-hand at home. The small class size allows for individual attention, so sign up early before it fills up! This workshop is best-suited for participants 13 years of age and older.
Materials you’ll want to gather ahead of time:
- Buttons, x2 the same size (larger is better) flat without a shank. Anything you have two of that’s flat & round will work though, wooden nickels, clock faces, etc.
- Ribbon, narrow (1/8”-¼”) and 24” long.
- Paper for pages, heavy weight text or cardstock. It can be all the same, or you can use a decorative paper for the half that will be the “front” and a plain paper for the half that will be the “back” side of the pages.
- Glue for pages: PVA, white glue, or glue stick
- Glue for button covers: a heavy duty glue like E6000 or Gorilla Glue
- Scrap paper for glueing on
- TOOLS: pencil & eraser, scissors, paste brush (if using PVA/white glue)
- OPTIONAL: a circle-punch the same diameter as your buttons. Otherwise we’ll be tracing and cutting w/ scissors.
- OPTIONAL: decoration for your pages. Suggestions: cut-out images, photos, rubber stamps, pen for drawing

This one-day workshop will introduce you to the basics of making books, covering fundamentals such as paper grain, folding, and stitching. Participants will gain understanding of both techniques and materials by working with paper, thread, and adhesives. We will be making a variety of structures, including a one-page folded book, a single-section pamphlet stitch, an accordion, and a Japanese stab binding. You will be able to leave with several binding styles under your belt, and the knowledge of how to adapt these structures to make your own notebooks, journals, or sketchbooks. No previous experience necessary. Level: All levels welcome, ages 16 and over.
