Houston, TX (April 5, 2023) — The Printing Museum is pleased to present Book Arts of Houston, an exhibition centered around the history of book arts in Houston and promoting its future.
Book Arts of Houston demonstrates book arts’ quiet legacy and enduring popularity amongst individual Houston artists despite little public attention given to the medium. Using “book arts” as an umbrella term to refer to a range of practices including bookbinding, artists’ books, and multiples, the exhibition provides a broad range of craft and conceptual work.
This in-person workshop (11AM – 3PM) explores pre-xerox copier technology and how contemporary artists and writers can use these low-cost techniques to publish editions of zines, chapbooks, prints, and flyers. We’ll begin by examining the history of office copying technology and how marginalized creators adopted these techniques in the early 20th century. Next, we’ll dive into demos of making master sheets, operation of vintage copiers, and creating your own simple copiers from off-the-shelf materials. Finally, participants will have full access to all of the materials and equipment to create their own editions with guidance from the instructor. We will explore hectography (gelatin printing) mimeography (stencil printing) and spirit duplication (alcohol transfers, also known as “ditto”).

Long before animation and motion pictures, we had optical toys! In this workshop, we will create a collection of paper optical toys developed in the early 19th century, like the zoetrope and phenakistoscope. These devices spin around a set sequence of images to create the illusion of movement. Templates to create model structures will be provided, along with tips for creating your own content that bridges books, toys, and animation.
Tools required (gather yourself): X-Acto knife or scalpel and extra blades, bone folder, metal ruler (at least 12”), small triangle 3-4”, cutting mat, scissors, PVA glue, glue brush, waste paper, pencil. If you have one, a hot glue gun.

Create expandable books with depth and perspective. A flag book has an expandable spine with layers of paper “flags” that pop out, making it a delightful structure for evoking movement and action. Tunnel books, also known as “peep show” books, expand for a dramatic three-dimensional effect through layered cut-out panels. Students will complete a finished book of both structures, plus models and ideas for variations.
