Please welcome Heather Smith as our new Community Engagement Coordinator! She remembers visiting The Printing Museum as a student and is excited to now be part of the staff.
Heather was born and raised here in Houston, TX. She received her undergraduate education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and recently graduated with an MA in History and Museum Studies from Tufts University in Boston. Her historical research centers on Ancient History of the Mediterranean and Medieval/Renaissance Europe. She has completed projects on themes such as the unique life and times of the Athenian politician/general Alcibiades and the cross-cultural connections evident in the Greco-Roman Mummy portraits. Heather has 6 years of leadership and teaching experience with youth, teenagers and adults with her most recent positions being Summer Camp Assistant Coordinator at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and European History Teaching Assistant at Tufts University.
She is thrilled to be joining The Printing Museum whose vision and themes are so near to her own heart. From the time she started reading fantasy and mythology stories as a child, Heather’s love of reading has grown. This passion manifested academically with research projects on ancient and medieval literature as well as professionally with her work with the Bridwell Library and Special Collections. She believes museums have the important opportunity to use artifacts, research and presentation to inspire people and to connect everyone to the value of studying the arch of human creation. Heather looks forward to working with the Houston community and the Printing Museum to continue creating opportunities for engagement and shared learning with the exploration of print-based media. In her leisure time, Heather enjoys Ballroom/Latin dancing, crafting and spending time with her pets.
