Renovation Update

Renovations are underway at the museum’s new facility on San Jacinto Street. The following is an update on progress.

Phase 1: Demolition

The existing facility was comprised of 27 offices and four large classrooms that have been gutted to make way for a more open floor plan that can accommodate our permanent collection galleries, a flex space for presentations and exhibits, two book arts studios, and a staff/volunteer break and lounge area. The second floor retains office spaces for staff and collection storage.

Phase 2: Systems

Significant updates are being made to plumbing to replace deteriorating pipes and to accommodate more bathrooms and water supply in the studios. Crews have started framing the spaces on the first floor and running electrical wiring for contemporary lighting design.

Phase 3: Finishes

With framing complete, contracting crews are working on flooring, a process that requires the removal of glues, leveling of uneven concrete foundation, the laying of vinyl laminate tiles, and the staining and polishing of the concrete floors in the studio spaces. Crews installed the drop ceiling, lighting fixtures, and acoustic ceiling tiles. Flooring contractors have also completed tiling the restrooms.

Summary: With delays to permit review by the city, it is difficult to say with any certainty what day the museum will reopen. We expect construction to be completed and the museum to take occupancy in late fall. Reopening to the public is slated for January 2023.
