Get creative with wood type in this special workshop with visiting book artists Peter and Donna Thomas, who will explore various ways of using wood type to create illustrations. Each participant will use letters to create shapes or graphic images or use letters and words to create abstract designs. They will then print the type using multiple color runs, using a split fountain, learning how to change the value and tone of the color during the various press runs without having to wash up in-between. Each participant will make enough copies to share with the other classmates. We will end the workshop by creating a non-adhesive folder binding to hold the prints.
Peter and Donna Thomas are book artists from Santa Cruz, California. They make paper, print and bind books. They make both edition and one-of-a-kind books. Their books combine the precision of the fine press aesthetic with the structural creativity found in contemporary artists’ books. Current books available are shown on their website: http://www2.cruzio.com/~peteranddonna/. They are celebrating 40 years of making books and traveling cross country as “Wandering Book Artists” to visit the libraries that are hosting shows of their work.
