April Fools’ Eve’s Eve is the perfect time to blend culinary creativity with literary love and sprinkle with a dash of humor. And 2019 we continue the tradition at The Printing Museum, our beloved ‘home base.’
Co-hosted by the Houston Book Arts Guild and WiVLA (Women in the Visual and Literary Arts), this event marks our fourth year to participate in this international celebration of gastronomic books.
What’s an Edible Book Festival? It’s an event that features food shaped like, or referring to, books. Beginning with that simple and silly premise, much is possible!
Got a tasty idea? Entries are only $5 each. To reserve your spot at the table, email this info by March 28 to artjournal50[at]gmail.com:
- Title of your edible book:
- Your name or group name:

All submissions will be displayed and plenty of time provided for photo ops for your group’s website and social media pages. We’ll have light refreshments on hand, should all entries prove too good (or impossible) to eat!
A little competition adds spice to the evening:
Guests will vote their favorites in these categories:
- Best Depiction of a Classic
- Most Appetizing
- Funniest/Punniest
- Beloved Children’s Book
- Overall Fave
Prizes to be provided through donation by local bookstores and eateries. Everyone gets a vote so bring your people!
How did Edible Book Festivals get started?
Art librarian Judith A. Hoffberg and artist Béatrice Coron held the first edible book festival in 2000, after Judith conceived the idea at a holiday dinner with book artists in 1999. Béatrice created the Books2Eat website with a photographic gallery of edible books and links to similar events worldwide.
The
Houston Book Arts Guild has celebrated Books2eat at our April meetings in the past but this year we again team up with
WiVLA (Women in Visual and Literary Arts) to bring this festival, and the witty and creative connection between the books we love and the food we love to eat, to a wider audience.
