Mini-installation of 5 Year Plan Project by artist Aaron Sinift (which began in 2009) provides a window into an experiment in applied Gandhian economics. Swadeshi art book and jhola editions were created as a seva in honor of M.K.Gandhi. This independent DIY project reduces the degrees of separation between the international art world and Gandhi’s weaving collectives in India in a way that honors all participants as equals and cycles resources back to communities in need. The installation will consist of the 5 Year Plan book, wood blocks used in printing book pages, a spinning wheel, and twenty-two printed wall pieces on khadi cloth, including examples of ashram artworks, and contemporary works by Francesco Clemente, Yoko Ono, Donald Beachler, Chris Martin, Tamara Gonzales, Pushpa Kumari, and Monisha Raja.
This installation is happening in conjunction with the exhibition “Experiments with Truth: Gandhi and Images of Nonviolence”, taking place at The Menil from October 2, 2014 to Feburary 1, 2015. Visit http://www.menil.org/exhibitions-upcoming.html#gandhi_anchor for more details.
