TPM to close West Clay facility to the public after May 28, to prepare for Midtown move

Virtual public programs to continue

The Printing Museum will close its galleries and studios at 1324 West Clay Street — its home for 40 years — to the public after May 28, to prepare for its relocation to 3121 San Jacinto Street in Midtown later this summer.

All in-person programs — including but not limited to exhibitions, guided tours, public and private workshops and events — will be on hiatus during the summer. The museum will continue to offer virtual programs during the transition.

The board of directors authorized the sale of the building in January, 2020 and the relocation to a facility near other cultural attractions that better serves the museum’s programming goals well into the future.

The museum closed on the sale of the building in May, 2021 and immediately began a search for a new home. The board approved the leasing of a new facility at 3121 San Jacinto last November. At 9,500 square feet, this purpose-built facility will support improved preservation of our permanent collection artifacts, greater access to our book arts studios, equipment and resources; growth in studio workshops, memberships, and rentals; and improved ADA accessibility and more resources for the hearing- and vision-impaired.

The board and staff are energized by the possibilities this new space can present. We hope to welcome you to our grand reopening and 40th anniversary celebration events in the Fall. Stay tuned!
