Girl Scout Cadette – Book Artist

6th to 8th Graders, ages 11-14. (2 hours). 

  • Explore the art of bookbinding by starting with a hands-on tour of the museum, learning about the history of printing and book making.
  • Visit our Bookbinder’s studio where you will learn about the tools of the trade and the parts of the book. 
  • Be a Book Artist and make your own book or journal to take home!

Programs are booked on a first-come, first served basis. Two-hour programs are available on the first Wednesday of the month, depending on instructor availability, between 4:00 – 7:00 PM (you can book either 4-6pm or 5-7pm).

BSA Pulp and Paper Merit Badge

  • Make your own handmade paper!
  • Learn about the history of papermaking, and paper’s role in our society and economy.
  • Discover the trees that are the major sources of papermaking fibers.

BSA Graphic Arts Merit Badge

  • Screen print with our Artist-in-Residence!
  • See firsthand the evolution of printing from Gutenberg’s press to letterpress to offset lithography. 
  • See examples of printed books, newspapers and prints dating back to the 16th century.

BSA Journalism Merit Badge

  • Explore the origins of freedom of the press in America!
  • Witness how people like Benjamin Franklin, Susan B. Anthony and others used newspapers to bring about positive change in their time.
  • Come face-to-face with newspapers detailing historic events, like the sinking of the Titanic, the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the moon landing.

BSA American Heritage Merit Badge

  • Print a copy of the Declaration of Independence on a 19th-century iron hand press!
  • Read newspaper accounts of historic events like the end of the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Star-Spangled Banner.
