Book Fair

October 22, 2016 @ 5:00 am - 12:00 pm

TPM-2016BookFair Poster Reduced

As The Printing Museum moves toward recovery from a fire on May 10th, we are open this fall for workshops and special events.

Please join us on Saturday, October 22nd, from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., for the fourteenth annual Houston Book Fair at The Printing Museum will delight visitors with a wide range of items from moderately priced used books to rare and collectible volumes. Engage your senses with the smell of aged books, the touch of printed pages, and the crackling sound of well worn spines. The fair will provide a great variety of material for gift giving and personal enjoyment.

Accompanying the fair is a line-up of educational programming geared toward informing the public on the historical and cultural value of the printed page. Our program kicks off with free book appraisals by local book appraiser, Kurt Zimmerman from 10:00am to noon. A limit of two per guest. From 12:00pm to 2:00pm friends from Archivists of the Houston Area will offer a free preservation lab. The public is welcome to bring items for review and free consultation.

At 2:00pm J.P. Bryan, founder of The Bryan Museum in Galveston, Texas will speak in the theater on “Following Maps and Finding Books” discussing how his personal collection of printed materials enriches the larger museum collection in Galveston. Select food trucks, including Moon Rooster, will be present on site for feasting and palatable enjoyment.

Throughout the day a line-up consisting of approximately 20 dealers from across the country will present an array of rare items, including children’s books, Texana, mysteries, cookbooks, fine art and illustrated editions, historical documents, out-of-print, first editions, comics, and more.

Demonstrations will be conducted in the museum studios showcasing papermaking, letterpress printing, bookbinding and lithography. Visitors can witness the rare occasion of our linotype machine in operation. Additionally, the Houston Book Arts Guild and the Houston Printers Guild will be selling hand-made books and related crafts.

The entry fee is $8.00 at the door. Become a museum member for just $50 and get into the fair for free, and receive a limited edition letterpress book fair poster. Other membership benefits include a 10% discount on class tuition and 10% discount in the museum gift shop, as well as being added to our exclusive mailing list, which offers invitations to special museum receptions and events.
